Embracing Emotions: A Mindful Approach to “Inside Out 2”

I hope this past week was more bright than cloudy and more soothing than harsh for your souls.

“Inside Out 2,” the much-anticipated sequel to Pixar’s groundbreaking film, continues to explore the intricate world of emotions within the mind of a young person. This time, the narrative delves deeper into the importance of self-awareness and mindfulness in managing emotions, particularly for children. By understanding their emotions, children can learn to prioritize positive feelings while acknowledging and managing negative ones, fostering a balanced and resilient mindset. We tend to listen to our kids but don’t necessarily look at them when conversing. With my kids, I often look at their facial expressions when they’re speaking. And can see when there is a disconnect between what they’re saying and what they’re feeling. One time my daughter spent a few days reassuring herself and me that she was going to do well on her fourth grade finals. But her face had a frown and her eyes looked afraid. I didn’t go by her words because those can be filtered away from the truth. I brought up how I thought she seemed more worried than she was expressing and then helped her make a plan of study. The magic wasn’t in the study plan, it was in the recognition of her true feelings.

The Role of Emotions in “Inside Out 2”:

In “Inside Out 2,” we revisit Riley, now a teenager, navigating the complexities of adolescence. The film introduces new emotions and challenges, reflecting the evolving emotional landscape of growing up. The core emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—continue to play pivotal roles, but the sequel emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and mindfulness in emotional regulation. Acknowledging all emotions with your children is as important as then bolstering up the positive ones.

Mindfulness and Emotional Awareness;

Mindfulness, the practice of being present and fully engaged in the moment, seems to be a central theme in “Inside Out 2.” The film illustrates how mindfulness can help children recognize and understand their emotions without judgment. By being mindful, Riley learns to observe her feelings, identify their sources, and respond to them in a healthy manner. It is key to identify the sources of emotions but that may not happen instantly so first acknowledging all of the emotions is an imperative step towards understanding them.

For instance, when Riley feels overwhelmed by a mix of emotions, she practices mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing and grounding exercises. These practices help her stay calm and centered, allowing her to process her feelings more effectively. Through mindfulness, Riley gains a deeper understanding of her emotional triggers and learns to navigate her inner world with greater ease.

The Importance of Self-Awareness:

Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence. It involves recognizing one’s emotions, understanding their impact, and using this knowledge to guide behavior. In “Inside Out 2,” Riley’s journey towards self-awareness is depicted through her interactions with her emotions and the situations she encounters. My younger son would try to deny that he was feeling anxious. No child wants to be uncomfortable. But I helped him normalize uncomfortable emotions without judgement. I told him that feeling anxious was also a part of him just like his toe or his elbow were. The anxious feeling ceased to be a threat to him and he began to own the feeling and then get past it.

As Riley becomes more self-aware, she realizes that all emotions, even the negative ones, have value. For example, Sadness, often seen as a negative emotion, plays a crucial role in helping Riley process loss and empathize with others. By acknowledging Sadness, Riley learns to appreciate the depth and richness of her emotional experiences.

Prioritizing Positive Emotions;

While it’s essential to acknowledge all emotions, “Inside Out 2” emphasizes the importance of prioritizing positive feelings. Joy, as the embodiment of happiness and positivity, continues to be a guiding force in Riley’s life. However, the film also highlights the need for a balanced approach, where positive emotions are nurtured without suppressing negative ones.

Riley learns to cultivate uplifting emotions such as gratitude, love, and hope. These emotions become her default attitudes, helping her navigate the ups and downs of life with resilience. For instance, when faced with a challenging situation, Riley practices gratitude by focusing on the positive aspects of her life. This shift in perspective helps her maintain a hopeful and optimistic outlook, even in difficult times.

Managing Negative Emotions;

“Inside Out 2” also addresses the importance of managing negative emotions in a healthy way. Rather than ignoring or suppressing them, Riley learns to acknowledge and understand her negative feelings. By doing so, she can address their root causes and find constructive ways to cope.

For example, when Riley feels anger or frustration, she practices self-compassion and self-care. She takes time to reflect on her feelings, understand their triggers, and find healthy outlets for expression, such as talking to a trusted friend or engaging in a creative activity. This mindful approach helps Riley prevent negative emotions from overwhelming her and allows her to maintain emotional balance.

“Inside Out 2” offers a powerful message about the importance of self-awareness and mindfulness in managing emotions. By understanding and embracing their feelings, children can learn to prioritize positive emotions while acknowledging and managing negative ones. This balanced approach fosters resilience and emotional well-being, equipping children with the tools they need to navigate life’s challenges.

Through Riley’s journey, the film illustrates that emotions are an integral part of the human experience. By practicing mindfulness and cultivating self-awareness, children can develop a deeper understanding of their inner world so that the buzzing of tough emotions does not fade the happy ones. Ultimately, “Inside Out 2” encourages us all to embrace our emotions, prioritize positivity, and approach life with a mindful and resilient mindset.

I often ask my children to remember to smile. I hope you feed your mind the emotions that uplift your soul this week. Draw your emotions on a piece of paper and encourage your kids to do the same and then share them and talk about them.

Namaste… see you next week…I’ll be recording my audio versions of my Blogpost soon for your convenience.
