How to Practice Self-Care as a Busy Mom

As a busy mom, it can be easy to put your own needs on the back burner. Between taking care of your children, managing the household, and possibly even working outside the home, it can feel like there’s no time left for yourself. I want to help you become a mindful mom and enjoy a better life. Once you approach your day through the lens of being present and feeling at peace, you will be able to practice self-care in ways you overlooked in your usually overwhelming day. Practicing self-care is essential for your overall well-being and happiness. Here are some tips on how to prioritize self-care as a busy mom:

1. Carve out dedicated time for yourself: It’s important to set aside specific time each day or week that is just for you. Whether it’s waking up a little earlier in the morning, taking a lunch break, or scheduling a regular evening activity, having dedicated time for yourself will help you recharge and rejuvenate. This time is better lived at a slow mindful pace. Your kids will observe your calm and will absorb your calm.

2. Set boundaries: Learn to say no and set boundaries with others. It’s okay to prioritize your own needs and say no to additional commitments or requests that will overwhelm you. Setting boundaries will help you create space for self-care and prevent burnout. Just like you take care of your loved ones, become a loved one for yourself as well. Change your perspective – when you engage in self-care, you are taking care of a loved one.

3. Engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation: Make a list of activities that you enjoy and that help you relax. It could be reading a book, taking a bath, going for a walk, practicing yoga, or listening to music. Find time to incorporate these activities into your daily or weekly routine. Make them easy to access and pleasurable to do. Begin small and mindfully. You can elevate the activities as you get energized by looking forward to those special sections of time throughout your day.

4. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment. It can help reduce stress and increase overall well-being. Find moments throughout the day to pause, take a few deep breaths, and bring your attention to the present moment. This can be as simple as taking a few mindful breaths while waiting for your child to finish their activity or practicing a short meditation before bed. It is important to understand the essence of being mindful. In order to be fully present I find deep breathing extremely helpful. It is important to look at your kids with a steady gaze when they are speaking with you and to involve them in the self-care planning. You will be giving them a gift for lowering stress in life.

5. Seek support: Don’t be afraid to ask for help or seek support from others. Whether it’s asking your partner, family members, or friends for assistance with childcare or household tasks, or joining a support group or online community for moms, having a support system can make a big difference in your ability to practice self-care. There is no weakness in collaborating with your village. The loved ones that make up your village will flow into your rhythm if you plan your days mindfully and really commit to wellness for yourself and the ones who help you. There is strength in being transparent with your trusted people and you will feel much happier when you know you are not alone in helping yourself flourish.

Remember, practicing self-care is not selfish. Taking care of yourself allows you to show up as the best version of yourself for your children and loved ones. By prioritizing self-care, you are setting a positive example for your children and teaching them the importance of taking care of themselves. So, make self-care a priority and enjoy the benefits of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Balance is different for everyone. You do not have to apologize or be worried about how you are perceived by others in the choices you make. Once you begin to add your unique self-care rituals to your day, you will feel content and empowered. And the ones who love you will welcome this. Being a mindful Mom means understanding that only you can decide what brings you peace.
